A LETTER FROM DR. MANDEL

Hello Patients, Friends, and Colleagues,

I was honored to host a dinner for the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes in the beginning of July. I had the good fortune to connect with some of our Heroes and I was inspired by their stories. It gave me a better understanding of combat related PTSD and how it differs from most PTSD acquired in civilian life.

PTSD sufferers receive great benefits from IV Ketamine Infusion Therapy and I’m proud to be of assistance in their recovery. I have increased my focus on helping PTSD sufferers and in particular those who have served in uniform. I will continue to press forward to get the word out that help is available. Ketamine treatment is particularly effective at relieving suicidal thoughts and impulses.

I believe in the importance of taking time out to support one’s own wellness and regularly encourage my patients and my staff to do so. Recently, I gladly took my own advice and spent the week of the 4th of July sailing with my beloved wife Melanie. We read books, watched movies, ate delicious food, did plenty of swimming and hiking, and even took naps. It was wonderful and I feel quite rejuvenated. This recharging is good for me and it’s good for my patients too. As we approach mid-summer, I hope you make the effort to get outside and enjoy some sunshine. Take time for a little vacation, BBQ with friends, or even a staycation can be a lot of fun.

Grab the July issue of LA Magazine and read the wonderful article on me and my clinic; written by Rene Chun and photographed beautifully by Dan Winters. Our team is proud to be depicted in this feature. A big thank you to all who made that possible. There is also another great piece and excellent video to accompany it on Wired Magazine’s website this month. Find the link below in the news section, where you can hear from one of our brave and articulate patients, Sean. As always, wishing you and yours peace and happiness.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven L. Mandel

WELCOME DENISSE – OUR NEW NURSE

68159365-eeae-44d8-8e94-e5b79bdd5753 July Newsletter Los Angeles Southern CaliforniaKetamine Clinics of Los Angeles is excited to introduce to you the newest member of our team, Denisse Macias. Denisse has worked in the medical field since 2010, where she was a Project Assistant at USC Cancer Center. Her interest in becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse began when she was a little girl and was inspired by her mom’s commitment to caring for the elderly. Her mom always expressed that nurses struggled giving kind care to the elderly and that her goal was to offer comfort to them during their senior years. With such a great mentor, Denisse joined our team eager to bring the spirit of her mom and her previous nursing experience to our environment and learn something new in the field of medicine. Ketamine was of great interest to her as she had a dear friend whose life may have been saved if a treatment like this was known and available to her.

Denisse is a calm, poised, and soft-spoken nurse who makes compassionate care for patients her #1 priority. A native of Los Angeles, Denisse grew up a city girl and is bilingual in English and Spanish. She adores her husband who is a chef and makes her tasty lunches daily to keep her well-nourished for our patients. In her spare time, she likes to cuddle with her dog Penny, read graphic novels, go to concerts, watch a comedic or animated movie, and spend time with family and friends.

Having completed her first month with our team, Denisse states, “I have never worked with such a dedicated team of individuals so focused on healing and caring. The training has been meticulous and it is comforting to have the support to go the extra mile for patient care. I feel lucky to be a part of something so special. Thank you.”

KETAMINE AND DEPRESSION:

Major depression affects more than 16 million American adults each year, nearly a third of whom don’t find relief from antidepressants and other traditional treatments. When depression isn’t treated, it increases the chance of alcohol and drug dependence, as well as suicide. The anesthetic ketamine could offer hope for people.  Click Here to read more…

That’s why denizens of Silicon Beach have been flocking to a local clinic that offers a radical alternative when standard treatments fall short.

Death by tech has gone viral. At the Apple campus in Cupertino, Edward Thomas Mackowiak, an engineer described by a colleague as “driven to no end,” shot himself in a conference room. Uber coder Joseph Thomas left this world by “SIW” (self-inflicted wound). “I’m not dead but I wouldn’t describe myself as ok,” he wrote on Facebook a month before pulling the trigger in his San Francisco garage. ” Read More…

SAFETY COMES FIRST
RE-CERTIFICATION IN BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)

Our entire team was re-certified together in Basic Life Support (BLS) this month. We enjoyed going over safety protocols together and found the refresher very helpful. We pride ourselves on creating a safe environment for patients and for one another. We hope to never need to implement this training, but we are confident in our ability to resuscitate someone if needed. In addition, our medical staff (Dr. Mandel, Mary, Kikila, and Denisse) are all certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) which requires extensive additional training in resuscitation. With a hospital-grade crash cart and monitoring equipment, highly trained staff, and an incredibly experienced physician, we provide the safest possible environment for our patients. It is important to note that ketamine, when used clinically, is a very safe medicine and we are grateful to not have had a single emergency after over 4,500 infusions in 3.5 years. Should that day ever come, we are more than prepared.
